Dr. Ronald (Ron) Gary Kilner, a seasoned legal practitioner, was admitted to practice law in 1974. Prior to his judicial appointment, he maintained a successful private practice in Brisbane, specialising in commercial law and town planning law. He also gained international experience, advising clients on joint venture agreements, contract disputes, and documentation in Indonesia and China.
In 1998, Dr. Kilner transitioned to the judiciary, serving as a Magistrate in various courts across Brisbane and the Gold Coast. During his tenure, he presided over a wide range of cases, including criminal law, domestic violence, and traffic law matters.
Since retiring from the bench in 2024, Dr. Kilner has returned to private practice, focusing on commercial law and criminal law. His extensive legal experience, coupled with his academic qualifications, positions him as a highly respected legal practitioner.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts (University of Queensland), Bachelor of Laws (University of Queensland) and Doctorate (University of Queensland).
Dr. Kilner has been actively involved in his community, serving as a Rotary Club member for 15 years, chairing a large Gold Coast body corporate, and serving on the board of the Gold Coast project for homeless youth for 15 years. He has also contributed to public service by serving on the Gold Coast Mayor’s disaster relief committee and Queensland government committees advising on traffic offense penalties. In addition to his community work, Dr. Kilner has dedicated time to mentoring law students at the University of Queensland and Griffith University, as well as lecturing at various universities. Prior to his legal career, he served as a commissioned officer in the Royal Australian Air Force.
In his spare time, Ron is an avid fisherman who enjoys boating and surfing.
